Sheppard stranded alone on an alien planet becomes a pet?

Hi, I am looking for a story where John is injured and stranded on a planet and is kind of adopted by an alien. They weren't humanoid and didn't speak the same language and John becomes sicker until they take him to the stargate. I remember it being quite a long story but can't remember its name or where I read it so would really appreciate anyone helping me find it again!
