The fic I remember was a John/OMC fic, in it they were on a planet when locals plus John get kidnapped by slavers who escape to a desert planet where they are rescued (by the male love interest), and they're all interested in John and think it's weird he wears so much clothing. There are various events (I seem to remember that one bit is where there is a problem with ancient tech poisoning the water supply, and a local tribe being awkward?) And at some point John marries the leader of the male tribe, which is sort of a way to get round DADT, because there is a moment where the affair is broken off because a geologist explains DADT badly to the love interest...
