John, Dave, a restaurant and a gun

Those are the few details I remember from a story I read quite a while ago. I don't know if it was long or short. In fact, the only other thing I remember is Dave telling John, or thinking to himself (?), that he was amazed/shocked that John ran toward a gun rather than away.

Any help in finding this story would be appreciated. Thank you.
